Emil Skála was a Czech Germanist and geographer and pedagogue, professor at the Department of German Studies at Charles University in Prague. As a Germanist, he specialized in the Early New High German period. On the basis of very detailed research of early New High German sources, he contributed significantly to the illumination of the process of the emergence of the written German language. Especially in Germany, he received great recognition for his work. His scientific activity was multifaceted: as a Germanist, he researched Prague German, dialectology, bilingualism, lexicography and language contacts between Czech and German. As a geographer, he focused primarily on toponymy.
