Their story
Born Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar in 1946, Freddie Mercury moved to London as a teenager and went on to become one of the most electrifying performers the world has ever seen. As the lead singer of Queen, he wrote songs that refuse to age — Bohemian Rhapsody, Somebody to Love, We Are the Champions.
His four-octave voice, theatrical stage presence and fearless originality redefined what a rock frontman could be. At Live Aid in 1985, he led 72,000 people at Wembley through what is still called the greatest live performance of all time.
Freddie died on 24 November 1991, one day after publicly sharing his AIDS diagnosis. More than three decades later, his music is still sung in every language, in every country — and the show, as he promised, goes on.
