Deng Xiaoping, originally Deng Xiansheng, born August 22, 1904 in Guang'an, Sichuan, died February 19, 1997 in Beijing, was a leading politician in the Communist Party of China. He was China's supreme leader from 1978 until his own death in 1997. Deng belonged to the Hakka minority and originally came from Sichuan Province in southwestern China. During the early 1920s, he pursued university studies in Paris, France.
